Personally I feel that the idea of vampires desiring social acceptance is ridiculous. Sure, we don't want people throwing rocks at our heads, nor do we want it to be acceptable for hicks and religious zealots to drive a pole through our hearts, douse us in gasoline and light us up, or lop our heads off. But an intrinsic power and glory of being a vampire is the intrigue born of mystery that the iconic vampire possesses. That intrigue is absolutely and irretrievably thrown to the wind when some whiner in black lycra and a pair of plastic fangs lands on the set of Oprah and begs for "acceptance."
That acceptance essentially requires society to understand that the would-be vampire is "just like everyone else." I am NOT like everyone else. I have no wish to be like anyone else. Nor should any other self-respecting vampire out there in the world.
In this world of bioengineering, the human genome, and astrophysics, there are few mysteries enough for those souls who scream out to bask in the unknown - in the mystery of darkness and states outside humanity's daylight. Those who would destroy that mystery are anathema to me, and even if you don't realize it yet, they are anathema to you as well.
A "vampire" looking for human acceptance is essentially using vampirism for attention. Like punks walking in the mall with 8 inch mohawks screaming at everyone, "what the hell are YOU looking at!?," the situation itself is a sad play at getting any kind of attention at all. I would hope those considering themselves vampires would be adept at satisfying their desires in much more constructive and mature ways.
It is my most heartfelt recommendation that anyone considering themselves a vampire regress the first law of the Black Veil (if you bother with such things) back to the "Secrecy" it once maintained, rather than the dumbed-down "Discretion" it has become. It is my suggestion that the society as a whole re-invent itself, create new intrinsic rites and traditions, create a new scene and keep that vampiric social evolution a secret from all outsiders. In such a way are we empowered, and the vampire may reclaim its intrigue.
